Forge of Empires

Forge of Empires at odd hours

Forge of Empires is almost entirely indifferent to what time it is. Nothing attacks your city, production waits for you, and the only thing that cares about your schedule is a guild - and guilds here are unusually tolerant of irregular members.

The game itself is a long optimisation problem: too little space, too many buildings, a research tree that keeps offering something better. It rewards thought rather than speed, which makes it one of the few genuinely good tired-brain games.

Guild expeditions are the one piece with a weekly rhythm, and even those can be done at any hour within the window.

Why it works on a night shift

  • City through eras
  • Research tree
  • Tactical battles

Right for odd hours because

Nothing in it is live. Your city is exactly as you left it whether that was six hours or six days ago.

Less suitable if you want the social side to be active when you are - guild chat follows ordinary evenings.

Starting on an odd schedule

Tell your guild your hours when you join. Most will happily take somebody who covers a quiet slot in expeditions.

Set long production before sleeping and short production before a shift. It sounds obvious and almost nobody does it.
