Rail Nation at odd hours
Rail Nation is a game about moving goods efficiently, which turns out to be exactly the right thing to do at two in the morning. There is no combat, no one to fight and nothing that needs quick reactions - only a network that could be better.
Six eras move the whole server forward together, so the map changes under everybody at once and a route that worked last week stops paying. That rhythm keeps a long game from going stale without requiring you to be present at any particular hour.
Associations carry the late game and most of them are international, which means somebody is usually around whatever time you log in.
Why it works on a night shift
- Route building
- Train fleet
- Economic race
Right for odd hours because
Nothing in it is time-sensitive at the scale of hours, and the association chat spans enough time zones that you are rarely alone.
Less suitable if you want other people to interact with directly - this is mostly a solo optimisation game with a shared scoreboard.
Starting on an odd schedule
Set long routes before you log off. A well-chosen route pays for the whole time you are asleep.
Join an association early and mention your hours. Most are glad to have somebody covering the quiet part of the day.
